Property development is the right thing

The need for housing

There is simply not enough housing to meet the demand in Britain. The housing market has boomed as a result, and many predicted a price crash. The age of the average first-time buyer is the highest ever and many young people cannot get a foot on the property ladder.

There is a moral case for building more housing so that our children, friends, neighbours and key-workers can enjoy a decent standard of accommodation. We are especially keen to bring empty and redundant buildings back into use.

The stability of the national economy is threatened by extremes in the housing market, and it is in everyone's interest that Britain remains prosperous. By developing sites for well-designed, desirable new homes, everybody wins.

Brownfield land

The Government has set targets for re-using "brownfield land" - land that has already been built on in the past. More efficient use of derelict or under-used land means that more of the truly rural countryside and parklands can be preserved.

If you don't develop, someone else will

The demand for building land is no secret. You might not like the idea of building in your garden, but the person who buys your house might well see things differently. Why let someone else take the value of your asset?

Consideration for neighbours

The Council has a statutory duty to consult with people affected by planning applications, and to ensure that their interests are protected by proper administration of legislation and procedures. This means that your neighbours receive every opportunity to make formal contributions to the process. (Your neighbours might be quietly working on their own development ideas!).

Of course, Favoured Locations is happy to liaise informally with neighbours at your request.

A good starting point is the government-commissioned, Barker Review of Housing Supply available from HM Treasury.
